Trauma/PTSD
Many people in our world have endured traumatic experiences. Some examples of traumatic events can include having been physically or sexually abused or having gone to war. However, trauma is very often subjective. There are other disturbing events that can happen to a person that can be considered traumatizing to an individual. Some other common traumatic experiences can include abandonment, divorce, death of a loved one, or being diagnosed with a serious medical condition just to name a few. The list can go on and on. The bottom line is that if it was disturbing to you and you think about it often, and have a hard time making sense of it, it’s a trauma. When disturbing things happen to us, we try to make sense of it. We may ask “why me” or we may even blame ourselves for it. When trauma happens it can change the way we feel about the world and ourselves, which can lead to anxiety, depression, or feelings of guilt or shame. It can also affect our relationships with others. However, with therapy, you can heal from your trauma. Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), are just some of the evidence-based treatment modalities that our therapists utilize to help clients heal from traumatic events. Utilizing these techniques with other modalities can help the client to lead a more fulfilling, happier life free of the anxiety, depression, and/or guilt and shame.
